Former King Gyanendra Shah Expresses Fear Over the Nation’s Survival
Former King Gyanendra Shah has stated that concerns have arisen regarding whether the country itself will survive. Issuing a message on the occasion of the 304th Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day. He expressed deep concern that the country continues to face a crisis.. Even though nearly two decades have passed since he left the Narayanhiti Royal Palace.
“Yesterday, people worried that they were not building the nation; today. They fear that they might not even be able to save it.”
Former King Shah mentioned that the monarchy. Which acted as the common representative of Nepalis of all castes, religions. And regions, never shied away from the responsibilities entrusted to it by the people. Calling upon all Nepalis to move forward with a sense of duty, he said. “It is our view and call that all Nepalis should realize this duty and follow the ‘Prithvi Path.’. Wherever Nepalis are in the world, they are of Nepali origin. “Therefore, the nation’s prestige directly shapes the prestige of every individual Nepali.”
Noting that the continuous exodus of manpower from the country signals despair regarding the nation’s future. He also expressed concern that capital, capitalists, and industrious entrepreneurs have now also started to leave the country.
Education and Personal Life
Education: He completed his education up to Senior Cambridge at St. Joseph’s College in Darjeeling, India. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree from Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
Marriage: He married Komal Rajyalakshmi Devi Shah in 2027 B.S.
Children: He has one son (Paras Shah) and one daughter (Prerana Shah).
Becoming King Twice
In Nepal’s history, Gyanendra Shah is among the rare individuals who became king twice:
First Time (2007 B.S.).: Towards the end of the Rana regime. When his grandfather King Tribhuvan and father Mahendra took refuge in India with their family. The Ranas declared him King of Nepal for a brief period when he was just three years old.
Second Time (2058 B.S.):. Following the tragic Narayanhiti Palace Massacre on Jestha 19, 2058 B.S.. Which wiped out King Birendra’s lineage, he ascended the throne again on Jestha 22, 2058 B.S.
Reign and the End of Monarchy
“After he became king for the second time, significant political upheaval marked his reign.”
The Maoist insurgency was at its peak.
On Magh 19, 2061 B.S.: He dissolved the government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba & assumed direct control of state power.
In protest, seven political parties and the Maoists jointly launched the 2062/63 People’s Movement.
After the success of the movement, the reinstated parliament curtailed the powers of the monarchy. Finally, on Jestha 15, 2065 B.S.: The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic. Formally ending the monarchy.
Present Situation
King Gyanendra Shah after leaving the Narayanhiti Palace, he currently lives as a private citizen at Nirmal Niwas in Kathmandu. He occasionally shares his views and messages on religious, cultural, and contemporary national issues. He also has interests in nature conservation and literature, writing under the name “G. Shah.”
